5 tips to living a more MINDFUL life:

What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness to me is about being aware of your thoughts, feelings and surroundings. It can be as simple as being more intentional with your daily habits and taking control back with the choices you make, what you eat, who you hang out with, how you start your day, what you’re wearing and how you choose to live your life.

Being more aware and mindful of these simple choices can help you live a more joyful, positive life that aligns with your values and goals.

Here are a few tips that I incorporate into my day or week to make sure I am making mindful choices:

1. CREATE GOOD DAILY HABITS

Are you creating good habits in your daily life?

Start small with simple things like making your bed each morning when you get up, making an effort to move your body daily or writing a to-do list and setting your intentions for the day.

Part of my morning routine is having a warm lemon, honey and ginger drink to kick start my day and I always make sure I drink plenty of water throughout the day, which I find keeps me hydrated and alert.

To help with a busy morning or to stop me procrastinating, I like to have my clothes ready the night before, for what I need for the next day.

I also like to finish my day with a simple wind-down routine, such as dimming the lights, and having a cup of herbal tea after dinner.  Then I make it a habit to switch off technology at a reasonable time before bedtime and have my book on my bedside table, so it’s an easy reach to read a few pages before lights out.

2. CLEAR OUT THE CLUTTER

How is this connected to mindfulness you may be wondering?

Well, have you ever stood in front of your wardrobe for ages, not knowing what to wear, overwhelmed by choice, or you end up wearing something that you don’t feel good in, it can affect your mood or even confidence. So it’s time to have a good sort through your clothes, remind yourself of what your style actually is and only keep items that bring you joy or make you feel great all day.

So whilst we’re at it, why stop at your wardrobe?

It’s time to clear out your draws, kitchen, bathroom cupboards, garage, and office. Do it in bite sized chunks and pick a room or cupboard each week and ask yourself if you value the items or if it's just collecting dust and it’s time to let things go.

3. JOURNALING JOURNEY

Have you ever kept a diary or journal?

It may seem daunting or yet another thing to add to that to-do list, but really it’s quite simply getting your thoughts out of your head and onto paper, which essentially makes you feel lighter and like you’ve shared your woes with a good friend.

If you haven’t already got one, it’s time to head to the shops to pick yourself up a new journal and pen to inspire you to look forward to sitting down to write and purge. If writing isn’t your thing, drawing can be another way to express your thoughts and be creative too.  Choose a comfy chair or favourite spot in your house, make a cuppa and try to make it a daily or weekly habit that you look forward to.

4. MAKE TIME FOR MEDITATION

Do you feel anxious and overwhelmed at times?

Being present isn't always easy, especially when you have a lot of things going on in your brain, environment, and life.  One way to help keep you in the present moment and become more centred is to practise meditation. It could even be as simple as making yourself your favourite hot drink and sitting still for five minutes in the sun and mindfully enjoying your drink, instead of letting it go cold as you multitask.

If you have access to Spotify, there are some great meditations by mindfulness gurus such as Deepak Chopra or Joe Despensa, so seek them out if you can to have at the ready.

5. FEELING GRATITUDE

Do you feel appreciative for what and who you have in your life?

It's so easy to get our minds caught up in focusing on what we are lacking, instead of being grateful for and appreciating what we currently do have in our life. As we all know life is too short and gratitude can enable us to be present with the joy of life and create balance amidst life’s challenges.

Even receiving a phone call from a friend you haven’t heard from in a while can boost your mood and make you appreciate them more for taking the time to get in touch.

SMALL STEPS, BIG CHANGES

I hope I have inspired you today to add some simple mindfulness into your busy life and take some time out for yourself.  Even if you manage to do one of my tips today, these small steps can help you to be on the path to live a more mindful, calm and joyful life.
